A Study on the Indication of Treatment Methods in Condylar Fractures of Mandible

Abstract
The management of condylar fractures can be divided into nonsurgical and surgical treatments. Within the area of fracture management, there is much controversy and varied opinion related to the specific treatment modalities. Thus, we attempted to
study
the follow-up results of the 81 patients with a fracture of the condylar process who had received conservative or surgical treatments in our hospital from 1984 to 1989. For the purpose of this study, all fractures were classified according to
Spiessl
and Schroll into type I to IV. Then we assessed and compared the follow-up results of each cases according to the clinical and radiological criteria for evaluation. Our study showed that conservative therapy including intermaxillary fixation,
rubber
traction, and physical therapy offerd good or very good results, but in cases of severely dislocated fractures of the condyle, better results were obtained with the open reduction.
